Introduction
If your broker operating authority (MC number) is no longer active, you need to reinstate it before you can legally broker vehicle shipments again. This article explains how to reinstate broker authority through the FMCSA, what to check first, and what to do if your authority was fully dismissed.
How to Reinstate Broker Authority
Step 1: Confirm Your USDOT Status
- Look up your company on the FMCSA Company Snapshot by USDOT number, MC/MX number, or name.
- Make sure your USDOT status isn't listed as Inactive or Out of Service.
- Make sure your company name, address, and contact details are current.
Step 2: Sign In to FMCSA MOTUS
FMCSA registration changes are now made in the FMCSA MOTUS portal. USDOT PINs are no longer used. You sign in with a Login.gov account instead.
- Go to the FMCSA MOTUS portal and click Sign in with Login.gov.
- If you haven't set up MOTUS yet, create your Login.gov account, verify your identity, and link your USDOT number.
Step 3: Request Reinstatement
- In MOTUS, open your USDOT registration and choose the option to reinstate your operating authority (MC number).
- Complete and submit the request.
If Your Authority Was Fully Dismissed
If your broker authority was permanently dismissed, it can't be reinstated. You'll need to apply for new operating authority, which requires:
- Updating your USDOT record to include Authorized for Hire
- Applying for new broker authority
- Filing the required insurance electronically
- Filing a BOC-3 through a process agent. You can find one on the FMCSA process agents page.
What Happens Next
- Your MC number status updates in FMCSA systems.
- Your insurance and BOC-3 filings must be active.
- You may need to wait for FMCSA processing to finish before full access is restored.
For questions about your authority status, see FMCSA Registration Help or call the FMCSA at 1-800-832-5660.
