How to Choose Your Transport Type

    Introduction

    When setting up your carrier profile in Carrier TMS, you'll need to select a Transport Type. Your selection determines how your business is represented on the platform, how loads are matched to you, and how your operations align with FMCSA regulations. This article explains the three Transport Type options — Auto-Hauler, Towaway, and Driveaway — and how to choose the right one for your business.

    How to Set Your Transport Type

    You can set or update your Transport Type from your carrier profile in Carrier TMS.

    1. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner of Carrier TMS.
    2. Select Carrier Info from the Profile menu.
    3. Scroll down to the Transport Type section.
    4. Select the option that best describes your operation.
    5. Click Save.
    Note: Your Transport Type should match your FMCSA cargo classification. See the sections below to confirm the correct selection for your operation type.

    Auto-Hauler

    Auto-hauling is the most common Transport Type for moving multiple vehicles using a truck and trailer setup. This method is ideal for long-haul transport across state lines or large-volume delivery.

    • Uses a multi-vehicle trailer (open or enclosed) pulled by a truck or tractor.
    • Can carry two or more vehicles at once.
    • Common for car dealerships, auctions, and cross-country moves.
    FMCSA Requirement: In the FMCSA MOTUS portal, select "Motor Vehicles" under the Cargo Carried classification when updating your carrier record.

    Towaway

    Towaway typically involves a flatbed or wheel-lift tow truck, and is often used for roadside assistance, accident recovery, or local transport. Capacity is usually limited to one or two vehicles at a time.

    • Uses a tow truck or rollback flatbed to transport vehicles.
    • Can carry 1–2 vehicles at a time, depending on truck type.
    • Ideal for short distances or emergency vehicle relocation.
    FMCSA Requirement: In the FMCSA MOTUS portal, select either "Motor Vehicles" or "Tow/Drive away" under Cargo Carried when updating your carrier record.

    Driveaway

    Driveaway service means the carrier or driver physically drives the customer's vehicle to its destination. No trailer or towing equipment is used. This is common for relocating buses, RVs, or fleet vehicles.

    • No transport equipment is used — the vehicle is driven directly to its destination.
    • Only one vehicle can be moved at a time per driver.
    • Popular for fleet vehicle relocations, RV deliveries, and commercial vehicle moves.
    FMCSA Requirement: In the FMCSA MOTUS portal, select "Tow/Drive away" under Cargo Carried when updating your carrier record.
